Cole Bourgeois is a painter based in both Brooklyn, NY and Atlanta, GA.
Raised in a rural town outside Houston, Texas, she received her BFA in 2013 from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and Tufts University, with a concentration in painting and art history.
Working in a representational mode, Bourgeois explores the intersections of sensuality, corporeality, and the uncanny. Human forms, flesh, and fruit occupy an ambiguous space between body and object, familiarity and estrangement. Suspended against deep black grounds and monochromatic dermis functioning as both void and presence, her subjects emerge from an indeterminate spatial field, unsettling the boundaries between the animate and inanimate, the tangible and imagined. Through the tension between form and ground, Bourgeois investigates the psychological charge of looking and the fragile conditions through which intimacy, desire, and recognition take shape.
